ABOUT THE JOB:
The Mainstream Housing Program Coordinator reports to the Operations Coordinator for the Leased Housing Division. The Mainstream Housing Program Coordinator will provide individual counseling and housing search services for non-elderly disabled individuals who qualify for Section 8 assistance provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Notice of Funding Availability for Non-elderly disabled individuals. Responsible for preparing program materials and literature and working with partner agencies to implement this new program as set forth in the Boston Housing Authority's funding application submitted to HUD. This includes but is not limited to, the process of receiving referrals from owners of projects based assistance designed primarily for occupancy by the elderly which have established a preference for the elderly above that of non-elderly disabled individuals.
Duties & Responsibilities:

Performs all duties that assist subsidy recipients in identifying and leasing housing units.

Develop instructional materials and brochures related to the housing search process.

Assisting clients in setting up interviews with prospective owners.

Providing individual housing counseling to recipients.

Performs outreach activities to owners and management companies that include but are not limited to, personal contact, mailings, training programs and neighborhood organization meetings.

Maintains regular interaction and coordination with other housing providers and resource agencies for individuals with disabilities in the Greater Boston area such as Department of Mental Health, Department of Mental Retardation, Massachusetts Office on Disability, Massachusetts Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities, The Commission for Persons with Disabilities, The Boston Human Rights Commission, The Rental Housing Association, The Boston Fair Housing Commission and Metrolist to promote and expand the services available to Mainstream Housing Program clients to ensure maximum access to housing opportunities for BHA's clients.

Establishes a clearinghouse for rental listings reflecting the specific housing needs of persons with disabilities.

Gives the participants assistance to help clients find suitable apartments with needed accessibility features a new will request an exception to the Fair Market Rents when necessary for clients to rent accessible units.

Participates in meetings and training programs that promote the BHA's Mainstream Housing Program.

Responds to inquiries from individuals related to concerns about subsidized housing clients or unit. Refers such matters to the appropriate agency or staff person.

Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in the social sciences or public administration is required. A graduate degree in Social Work, Human Services, Law or a related field is preferred. Must possess excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills. They must also demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, be well organized and have demonstrated competence and sensitivity working with low income, culturally diverse individuals. Working experience with computer software programs is required. Working knowledge of the real estate and social service delivery systems for individuals with disabilities in the Boston area and familiarity with reasonable accommodation issues is desired.
