Harry Pierre’s life has taken some unexpected turns. Pierre first moved to Boston from Haiti as a young boy in 1971, where he attended Dorchester High, took College Courses at both Bunker Hill Community College and Roxbury Community College. As a young adult, Pierre trained and worked as an X-ray technician at Massachusetts General Hospital until he moved to New Jersey and raised the youngest of his four children as a single parent.
In July 2018, he returned to Boston and into his apartment with the BHA at Patricia White. It was difficult to come back to the city that he left so many years before, but Pierre believes it was the right move for him. According to Pierre, the BHA has been helpful to him at this stage in his life. He feels independent and loves how respectful his neighbors are.
“I’m doing well. I’m here. I’m happy. I feel blessed. I want to be able to help others who can’t say the same,” Pierre said.
Since moving back to Boston, Pierre has been volunteering with Senior Companions, a program run by the City’s Age Strong Commission that offers one-on-one services to seniors who have difficulty completing everyday tasks, such as grocery shopping and transportation to making appointments. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he has been using his time to call seniors to check in with them, chat, and make sure they feel safe and that their needs are met.
“I want to ensure that no one feels alone during these isolated times,” Pierre said
Pierre, an extremely selfless person, works every day to help his neighbors and the whole Boston community.
