Dorchester – Boston Senior Home Care hosted its annual Spring Community Health Fair for the residents of the Boston Housing Authority’s Lower Mills Elderly Development in Dorchester this Wednesday. BSHC and the BHA residents were joined by special guests, Mayor Martin J. Walsh, and BHA Administrator, Bill McGonagle, to participate in workshops and demonstrations related to healthy living and aging in Boston.
Residents engaged in the vendor resource area, which was filled with tables offering resources from each of the event’s partners, including AARP MA, Carney Hospital, FriendshipWorks, Ethos, Standish Village and Dorchester Village. There was also a blood pressure clinic and BMI checks for the residents who wanted to learn more about their personal health.
As the vendors shared their resources, residents participated in a healthy aging exercise class, instructed by J. Fish. During the class, residents learned an abundance of new exercises, designed to improve to bone strength, muscle power, and flexibility. They were encouraged to perform these exercises daily in order to stay active and healthy.
After the exercise class, residents viewed a cooking demonstration, presented by Standish Village, which focused on boosting brain health. Samples of the food, recipes to try at home, and signature spices were given out as part of the demonstration, to encourage residents to follow a nutritional diet that leads to a healthier mind and improved memory.
The fair ended with a healthy lunch, provided by an Ethos Community Café.
Residents had a great time and left with many new tips and tricks on how to age healthy in Boston!
