The COVID-19 public health emergency has been a difficult time for many BHA residents and communities, but at MLK Towers Apartments in Roxbury, resident leaders stepped up to the plate to help their neighbors stay fed and healthy over the past few months.
With the help of timely donations from St. John’s church in Roxbury, the MLK taskforce and maintenance staff have played a critical role in distributing much-needed meals to the many elderly and disabled residents in their community.
“We want to make sure everyone is fairly fed” said MLK Taskforce President Leon McCray. “The most important thing is that everyone is happy and healthy.”
On top of food distribution, the task force has been giving out masks and gloves to reduce the risk of COVID-19. They’re also helping to conduct wellness checks, deliver lunches right to the door.
“I want to give a special thanks to Saint John’s church in Roxbury for helping out with food donations. Not only are they doing lunches but every Tuesday, but task forces members and maintenance workers are helping deliver dinners door to door packed with healthy food and vegetables,” McCray said.
Nothing goes to waste. If there is any extra food the task force visits neighbors later in the day to making sure everyone is properly fed.
The Task Force has earned tremendous gratitude from the MLK community. A number of MLK residents have been hanging signs on their doors to thank them for their efforts. “People are speaking to me that I’ve never heard speak before,” McCray said.
