Sunday October 15, 2017- 42nd President Bill Clinton and his daughter Chelsea visited Boston for the annual Clinton Foundation’s Day of Action. The Clintons led hundreds of students to four different volunteer projects around the city. One project was held at Boston Housing Authority’s Orchard Gardens development in Roxbury.
After Hurricane Sandy struck New York, the country was looking for ways to help the people affected. Due to the outpour of support from individuals, companies, and organizations, Chelsea Clinton established the Day of Action program to help inspire others to make a difference. The program provides platforms for people to get involved and give back. It offers meaningful service opportunities that bring communities together to change the lives of others.
The volunteer day was part of Clinton Global Initiatives University Meeting, a three-day conference, hosted by Northeastern University, which addressed many social, environmental, and economic issues community starts to plant in April
Students from the Boston area joined residents of Orchard Gardens on the Day of Action to help fix up Saida’s Community Garden. This garden was created by the the Orchard Gardens Resident Association about 6 years ago, and is very dear to their hearts. Most importantly, the garden brings residents together in the community and offers the neighborhood a green space for recreation, beautification, and education. Volunteers helped to repair, paint, and clean the 42+ plots, so that the garden can continue to flourish and will be ready for the next season to come.
“I thought everything went well,” said Garden Committee Member Peggy Holt. “I was so happy when I learned that the Clinton Initiative wanted to help us build our Community Garden and beautify our neighborhood. It is important that families learn about healthy eating and fresh vegetables. That's one of the many reason why we want Saida's Community Garden to thrive”
The outcome was exceptional and the residents were very pleased. The Clinton Foundation and Northeastern will continue to help communities through volunteer work and further their global commitment and outreach.
