Income Deductions and Exclusions
There are certain deductions and exclusions that your manager will apply when calculating your adjusted income. Adjusted income is used so that you will pay an appropriate rent amount. The "Earned Income Disallowance," allows Boston Housing Authority (BHA) to exclude a portion of earnings for residents who became recently employed after a period of unemployment.
For both federal and state funded public housing, you may deduct medical expenses in excess of 3% of total household income, as well as child care expenses for children under the age of 13. Income of full-time students 18 and above (other than head of household) is also excluded for both programs.
