Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency Program
FSS is helping families become self-supporting
The Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS) is designed to help families receiving rental assistance become self-supporting. This program is voluntary and open to all families living in BHA federal family public housing. A desire to become self-sufficient and a willingness to take the steps to make this happen are the only requirements to join the program. FSS provides support and assistance to the entire family for up to five years.
The head of the household enters into a five-year contract identifying the employment goal of the participant and outlining the activities and services necessary to achieve this goal. The FSS Coordinator helps the family obtain the services listed in the plan while BHA establishes a savings account when the family increases its earned income. Many services such as job training, childcare, educational programs, counseling, and case management are provided and can be found with the help of the FSS Coordinator.
Our resident Felicite Njieptchi has had much success after enrolling in our program. Felicite graduated from the Boston University City Lab Academy Program as a Technician and from Bunker Hill Community College with an Associate of Science Degree in Biotechnology. With her certificates, she completed an internship at BU and was later hired as an Assistant Lab Technician. She has since received a better offer from Boston Medical Lab and is currently working as a Technician there.
